Resignation of Hungarian President Katalin Novak News

Hungarian President Katalin Novak submitted her resignation.

Novak announced her resignation on Saturday after coming under mounting pressure to pardon a man convicted as an accomplice to helping cover up a sexual assault case at a children’s home.

She said in a speech broadcast on state television: “I made a mistake… Today is the last day I address you as president.”

At least a thousand people protested in the country’s capital on Friday, demanding her resignation. The Hungarian opposition parties also called for her to leave office.

Novak decided to pardon about twenty people in April 2023, before Pope Francis’ visit, including the deputy director of a children’s home who helped the former director of the home hide his crimes.

Novak is an ally and former minister of the family of conservative Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
