Canadian Rhys Howden wins snowboarding gold at the World Cup in Italy

Canadian Rhys Howden claimed his second win of the World Cup cross-country skiing season on Saturday, crossing the finish line first in Alleghe, Italy.

The 25-year-old Cultus Lake native, from British Columbia, beat out Germany’s Florian Wilmsmann, who settled for silver, and bronze medalist Johannes Ojeski of Austria.

Fellow Canadians Jared Schmidt (12th) and Kevin Drury (15th) were eliminated in the quarterfinals.

Howden, who also won gold at an event in Nakiska, Alta., in January, now sits at the top of the men’s cross-country skiing standings with 476 total points. Alex Viva of Switzerland came in second with a score of 411, followed by Schmidt of Ottawa (388).

The Ski World Cup returns next week in Bakuriani, Georgia.
